Project Coordinator Profile

What prompted you to become a Project Coordinator?

I became involved with Hands On Orlando when I was a student at Rollins College and I really enjoyed that experience. After graduation, I wanted to become more involved with the organization and make a greater impact on the community.  Also, I wanted to strengthen my leadership skills and ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

How important is your role as a Project Coordinator in terms of causing successful volunteer projects?

My role as a Project Coordinator is extremely important because, it’s the PC who creates the mood on all projects. In order for a project to be a success, it must be organized properly and communication must be effective.  Volunteers participating in the project must feel valued and involved.  In addition, the people that we are there to serve must feel the same way.  It’s a juggling act and the PC is the biggest cheerleader for everyone involved.

Please share an experience you’ve had on a project that everyone should know about.

One Saturday at Westminster Care we took the children out for a stroll in the garden. They were excited and responsive to the fresh air, sunshine and scent of flowers.    A young volunteer close in age to the children in the facility, began reading a book to the group of children there in the garden.  It made the experience extra special.  As the children listened attentively and the young girl read them the story, I and everyone was touched by the scene.

What special skills or qualities are needed to become a successful Project Coordinator?

Most importantly, one must have the desire and dedication to help others. Additional qualities such as enthusiasm, passion, flexibility, ability to listen and learn from others are essential.

How has becoming a Project Coordinator impacted you personally?

Becoming a Project Coordinator has made me a more conscious and compassionate citizen. Also, it provided an opportunity to grow as a leader and individual.

What advise would you give to others interested in becoming a Project Coordinator?

Go for it!  It’s rewarding and life changing.
