Value of a Volunteer hour?

What is the value of a volunteer hour?  Great question!

In strict fiscal terms, the value is the actual amount of money a non-profit agency would spend to accomplish a necessary task, that it would otherwise pay for, divided by the number of skilled workers and labor hours involved.

We consider three primary categories of value; non-profit agencies, people in need of assistance and volunteers.

   Consider the contrasts:

· An attorney volunteers five hours to perform essential services for a non-profit organization and does not charge $250 an hour.

· A group of children visit a nursing home and brings smiles to residents.  The visit supports seniors, involves and educates children, but does it have any monetary value at all?

· A graphic designer creates a logo for a homeless shelter to help it attract attention, raise money and keep its doors open?

· A volunteer takes a telephone call from a battered spouse and helps the victim find emergency assistance.

Independent Sector says the estimated dollar value of a volunteer hour in Florida is $15.43 (2004), and $18.04 (2005) nationally (average hourly wage and benefits of nonagricultural workers).

We believe the dollar value of a volunteer hour is debatable and not possible to calculate in a general sense.

Social value extends beyond money and impacts volunteers as much as recipients of assistance and non-profit organizations.

Hands On Orlando does not charge agencies or volunteers for its services.  We depends upon donations to operate.
