Youth Involvement...

Hands On Orlando serves thousands of youth volunteers each year and we are proud of our track record and excellent results.

All of our projects welcome youth (minimum age of participation is set by the recipient agency, not HOO).

Every project we manage is designed to be a learning experience, meaningful and hands-on.

No projects involve administrative work, fundraising or a long-term commitment.  Youth, age 16 and over may also lead projects (composed of adults and youth) though our Project Coordinator training program.

We frequently receive questions about the minimum age of participation.  Since our projects do not support HOO we do not have the power to set the minimum age limit for volunteers on projects.  Most agencies we serve consider a variety of factors; liability, quality and quantity of work product.

It is our long-time policy NOT to assist non-profit organizations that say only adults may volunteer.

Here are a couple of examples.  Girls and boys as young as age four can participate in our Extreme Yard Makeover projects and some nursing home visits, but a project we manage to paint a gym will typically involve youth and adults 14 and above.  Youth age 10 and above can usually sort canned goods (depending upon our agency partner).  Minors below the age of 14 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All volunteers must bring a completed VIP form (waiver of liability) with them each time they volunteer.  ALL volunteers get involved at their own risk.  We base our guidelines on the outcomes of hundreds of volunteer projects.

Our projects are as diverse as the community we serve and every volunteer has opportunities to learn and serve.

Besides almost daily volunteer opportunities, for several years, HOO participated in something called National Youth Service Day.  Thanks to hard work and many local and regional partnerships, most notably the Osceola County Public Schools, our efforts involved the largest number of participating volunteers in the U.S.A. in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Today we prefer to manage each project and that was impossible when we had 175 occurring at the same time.

There is no cost to participate in our calendar projects.
